Excerpt & Giveaway - The Second Lie (The Immortal Vikings #2) by Anna Richland

The Second Lie
(The Immortal Vikings #2)

by Anna Richland

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A woman desperate to achieve her dreams.
To reassure wealthy clients, Christina Alvarez Mancini invented a jet-setting British owner for her Napa Valley wine collection service. Success has brought her close to buying her own winery, when irregularities at a London wine auction threaten her business.
A man in love with a good plan.
Stig, an immortal Viking thief, knows he’s found the perfect role. The California woman who created his character won’t discover what he’s up to in England until after he’s pocketed the money he needs. Then Christina walks into the auction preview, ready to ruin his plans, and he knows his boredom has ended.
Secrets that turn deadly.
By the end of the night, these two rivals must cooperate to escape kidnappers, British authorities, media and a pair of mysterious watchers. That’s when a game Stig’s played for a thousand years puts Christina’s life at risk.
Can two people whose identities are based on lies trust each other enough to survive?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Because Stig thought he and Christina were in the clear, free of the men who tracked them from London to France, he let his guard down. Big mistake.

Pounding his fist on the steering wheel wasn’t going to get them out of here, but it might keep him from letting out a string of gutter profanity in front of Christina. “Who are those guys?”

“How should I know?” She twisted to try to look out the rear windshield. “You’re the fugitive. They have to be following you.”

If the men from the train had followed them out of Calais, there must be a tracking device. He wasn’t carrying a phone, and Skafe had taken Christina’s at Bodeby’s, so it wasn’t mobile phone signals. The car was a random choice, too down-market for fancy factory locating devices, thus it should be clean. “Get the black duffel.”

She struggled to reach between the seats and yank the bag forward while he monitored the other car. It stayed back, but he was certain the circular headlights were his and the silhouette fit. The even distance between the two cars didn’t alter as he lowered the passenger side’s electric window. Freezing wind emphasized how screwed they were. He had to yell to be heard. “Anything that’s not from my flat or your personal items, throw it out.”

“What?” she yelled back.

Ivar, Wend and Skafe were known quantities, but he didn’t like having players he couldn’t identify moving around the board. “They’re tracking us, so get rid of their shit. All of it. Including the bag.”

It went. Random toiletries, a pair of black socks, a paperback book. And then the bag. She was left with the purple dress, the blond wig, her purse and his old fire medic pouch in a heap on her lap.

“Now you can add littering to the tally of my transgressions I know you’re keeping.”

“Do you joke about everything?” Her hands clutched her purse and his old satchel, even though it no longer held the bottle of Perlus.

“If you’d lived as long as I have, you’d realize humor is the only way to get through your five hundred thousandth day.” Even dark humor beat despair over the isolation forced on him by eternal life.

She sighed. “Trying to distract me with your immortal story? I was hoping for a better one, or, heaven forbid, a plan.”

“We could assume they’re tracking the car and steal a fourth one.”

“Isn’t crazy defined as doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different result?”

“That’s me. Crazy.” Clearly he could recount the complete story of Beowulf’s crew, shoot himself a couple more times for emphasis and receive no more than a few tuts and raised eyebrows. Rarely had honesty had such a complete lack of success. It goaded him. “We could go to a hotel, strip search each other for tracking chips and do a full body scan to find the implants aliens put on us while we were unconscious. What do you say to that idea?”

“The hotel part sounds good, because I really need to shower and sleep, but the search for tracking chips part reminds me of gorilla grooming.”

He gripped the wheel hard with both hands before making his real suggestion, risky only to her, a plan he couldn’t implement unless she agreed. “What if we ram them off the road into a ditch?”

She didn’t contradict the idea.

excerpt

Alyssa held up her shot, and Damien held up his half-full tumbler. She clinked his glass. "That's a pretty big shot you got there."

"Big is an understatement. I like to use the term huge. And impressive."

She laughed. "Oh really? Don't set yourself up for failure"

His eyes never left hers as he took a big swig of his glass. "Don't take my word for it. You can judge for yourself."

She folded her arms across her chest and stared back at him with a smile pressed into her plump, crimson lips.

He finally silenced her. "What's wrong? No comeback? No witty retort?"

"I have plenty of witty comebacks. I'm just not sure how far I want to take this tonight."

His cock was doing back flips, and she was enjoying watching him squirm. He took another gulp of his drink, while hers remained untouched on the bar. "I thought you wanted that shot. Can̢۪t handle the hard stuff after all, huh?" He placed his empty glass on the bar and taunted her with a smile. "I bet that hard-ass exterior is really just a front. Underneath it all, I bet you're just a girly-girl."

Her eyes opened wide, and her face went blank. For a minute Damien thought he went too far and pissed her off. He was about to apologize, but she picked up the shot glass and drained it, then slammed it down on the bar. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him so close he felt her breath on his lips. "I'm an expert at dishing out the hard stuff. I wield a needle for a living and pierce it through raw flesh without an anesthetic. The question is, can you handle it?"

Her self-righteous smirk mocked him with playful satisfaction, but Damien was about to keel over from the overwhelming heat that covered his body. Tiny dots of perspiration broke out on his forehead, and he was starting to think that maybe she was right—he couldn't handle her in the bedroom. Had he finally met his match? Could this gorgeous, ferocious woman break him? Could she be the one to make him surrender and beg for mercy?

"What's the matter? You look a little stunned. Did I scare you?"

"Hell no." He stepped closer. "You got me excited."

EXCERPT:

“THE SUPREME ART OF WAR IS TO SUBDUE THE ENEMY WITHOUT FIGHTING.” ~ SUN TZU

Fear, failure, and the fear of failure turned enemies into friends like nothing else in the convoluted world of intelligence and spying. No doubt the reason FBI representatives had been summoned to the Russian Embassy in Washington.

"We'll need a dump truck for the BS about to be heaped on us today," J.J. whispered to her co-case agent, Tony Donato. As the lead case agent behind the ruckus, she'd been ordered to attend the meeting, listen, and respond to nothing.

"Shhh," Tony whispered in reply. "The walls have ears."

Resident Andrei Komarov, the Russian equivalent to the CIA Station Chief in Moscow, led J.J., Tony, and Assistant Director of Counterintelligence John Nixon through the hallowed embassy halls until they reached a well-appointed conference room. It contained mahogany-paneled walls, large open armchairs, and an oversized table large enough to seat Komarov's ego and attitude, both massive in her past experience.

Komarov settled in at the head of the table, his face reddened and contorted. It was as if every word he was about to speak, no doubt carefully selected by the Foreign Minister, would sear his throat and exit his lips like sharpened razors carving him from the inside.

"We've all met before and are quite familiar with one another," Komarov began, shooting a slicing glare through J.J. "So, I'll feel free to dispense with the introductions and pleasantries since we all understand why we are here today." Her aggressive targeting of SVR officers for recruitment was legendary...or infamous, depending on which side of the table you sat. She suppressed the awe she felt. He was the personification of the Russian James Bond in looks, dress, and devoid of any semblance of accent.

J.J., Tony, and Nixon exchanged strained glances before she took a deep breath to brace herself. Komarov was about to progress through the four steps of surviving a massive operational failure.

Step 1: Admit nothing.

Review:

J. J. McCall is a tough FBI agent working in counterintelligence whose mother, Special Agent Naomi Jones, died while undercover on the job. There is mystery surrounding Naomi's death and J. J. may be in real danger if she discovers the truth. Meanwhile, FBI agents must hunt down U. S. traitor, Gary Mosin, before the stolen high level tapes he possesses can be given to Russia.  Russian and American officials meet to come to terms each accusing the other of misdeeds while neither side reveals anything closely resembling the truth.

While all this is happening a Russian sleeper agent accidentally takes out the son of a Mafia 'Don.' So while Russia and America are at odds, each trying to get to the highly classified information Mosin holds - now you have the Mafia and Russian mobsters moving to the tune of violence and death.
Because A No Good Itch is well written and transports it's readers through the twists and turns of a mmultifaceted tale of spies, underworld mobsters and government cover-ups, I give it 4 stars. ~JoEllen

Book Excerpt:

“Goodnight lovely boy.”  I stroked the side of my eight year old nephew’s pale face, noticing the purplish smudges under his eyes caused by a day of crying.  I tucked his duvet in around his shoulders. “Your mummy would be so proud of you.  I’m so proud of you, it’s been a difficult day and you’ve coped with it so well.”

“I miss her auntie Sophie.”  His voice wobbled and I watched a tear roll down each cheek.  My heart went out to him.  There had been times today when my grief had threatened to engulf me, and yet in spite of his tears and his own grief he had tried to be my pillar of strength.

“Come here.” I gathered him in my arms and he began to sob quietly into my shoulder.

It was the first anniversary of Katie’s death.  A year ago today her life had been snuffed out on a lane just outside our village when her car had skidded on a patch of ice causing her to lose control and nose-dive into a ditch.  She suffered fatal head injuries.  It was the tragic end of a young woman’s life, the end of a doting mother and the end of my very special sister.

“I know you miss her, my darling, I miss her too.”  My throat constricted.  I closed my eyes and took a deep breath willing my tears to stay put.  The pain my sister’s death had caused could only be matched by the pain I felt for my nephew’s loss.  No child should ever have to suffer the death of their mother.

Toby took a shuddering breath. “Do you think she can see us?” He wiped his eyes.

“I’m sure she can.”  I gave him a reassuring squeeze.  I sat back and put my hands on his shoulders. “Your mummy is with you every second of every day, watching over you, watching you grow into a clever, funny, and wonderful young man.”

He gave me a weak smile.

“She loves you and is counting on you to hold your head up high and be brave.”

He sat up a little straighter and wiped his nose on the sleeve of his pajamas. “I mustn’t let her down must I?”

His look of fragile determination swelled my heart. “You could never let her down.”

He was a handsome little boy, tall and muscular for an eight year old with a natural talent for sport and a distinct phobia of hairdressers.

I brushed a curl away from his right eye.  I felt a desperate urge to reassure him and let him know he wasn’t alone.  “I want you to know that I’ll always be here for you.  I may not be your mummy but I will always look after you and keep you safe as if I were.”

Toby nodded and his bottom lip trembled.

I wasn’t sure I could hold it together for much longer.  I got to my feet.  “It’s getting late and you’ve got school tomorrow.”

I said this maybe a little too brusquely as I struggled to hold back the tears.  I needed to go downstairs and bury myself in the sofa so Toby couldn’t hear my sobs.  But not before I had made a significant dent in the bottle of rosé chilling in the fridge.

I stood up and switched the lamp off beside his bed.

“I love you Auntie Sophie.”

“I love you too,” I said, swallowing back the lump in my throat.  I bent down and gave him a kiss on the cheek.  “Sleep tight and see you in the morning.”

I made my way down to the kitchen taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly in the hope that it would ease the pain lodged in my chest.  It had been a tough day and I felt sad and wrung out.  I knew that Toby would be asleep in a matter of minutes.  I, on the other hand, would struggle to find any respite in sleep until the early hours of tomorrow morning.  Insomnia had become my new best friend since Katie’s death.  Why was it that, as an adult, I had lost that ability to switch off? I envied that about children.

I let Toby’s dog, a Weimaraner called Mungo, out for a last wee before retrieving the bottle of wine from the fridge.  All I wanted to do now was curl up on the sofa and cry until I couldn’t cry anymore.  I made my way into the lounge and poured myself a glass of wine.  I downed it and stared into the fire roaring in the log burner.  My tears began to fall.  I put my glass on the coffee table and buried my face in the cushions.  I sobbed for my sister and the future she would never have, for Toby who would never feel his mother’s comforting arms around him again, and for myself, who felt the loss of Katie so keenly that it had been a constant weight tugging at my heart over the last twelve months.

Eventually, my tears subsided and my grief was reduced to dry, chest heaving sobs.  Despite feeling exhausted, I knew if I went to bed now I would only lie there, staring at the ceiling in the dark.  I scoured the sitting room for my Kindle.  The days I could cope with, I could keep busy and push the shadows of grief to the background, but it was the nights I struggled with most when the house was quiet and dark.  Darkness only seemed to emphasize my sadness and fear.
