Author Interview & Giveaway - Mist by Emily Mims

Mist

by Emily Mims

GENRE: Romance/romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The widow of a lying drug dealer, dulcimer-player Kylie Barstow Richards finds herself struggling to see through the mist of the Smoky Mountains to the truth-about her life, about the nightclub where she works, and about the bluegrass-playing musician who has arrived to steal her heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Kylie looked Ren in the eye.  “How much of that is the truth and how much of it was bullshit?”

Ren’s lips firmed.  “It’s the truth, every damned bit of it.  And that’s also why I did what I did.  The DEA honestly thought you were guilty.  A drug dealer took out one of my best friends, Kylie.  I’ve missed Jerry every day for the last two years.”

“And that justifies what you did to me?  Sorry, Ren.  Not buying it.  And I don’t care what your reasons for lying were, a liar is a liar.  And I can’t stand liars.”

“I get that, Kylie.  Look, obviously we blew it, and I’m just as sorry as I can be that I hurt you.”

“If you can be believed, which I seriously doubt.”

“I do mean it.  I’m sorry.  I’m really sorry.”

“I am, too, Ren.  I was just beginning to have a little bit of faith and trust again and you very effectively managed to take that away from me.  Congratulations.  I will probably never trust another man as long as I live.”

“Aw, Kylie, no.”  Ren leaned forward.  “Look, I know there is no way I can take back the lies I’ve already told.  But I can promise you this.  I will never, ever lie to you again about anything.”

Kylie shrugged.  “And now I’m supposed to believe that?  Ren, I’m sorry.  The damage is done.  The trust is broken.  Kind of like Humpty Dumpty.”

“I understand.  But Kylie, I’m going to tell you the truth from now on whether you believe me or not.”

“Knock yourself out.”

Talking with author Emily Mims!

What is your writing environment?
I have two.  In the city I have a quiet corner in my bedroom looking out the window to the oak tree in my back yard.  At the lake I have a computer station looking out the window at the lake.

Who is your perfect hero/heroine and why?
Nora Roberts’ Eve Dallas and Roarke-flawed but so likeable!

What authors have caught your interest lately and why?
I am enjoying a number of my fellow Boroughs authors-Nancy Sartor, Stacey Purcell, Brooklyn Ann and L.P. Maxa to name only a few.

What type of book have you always wanted to write?
I am writing the kind I like to write-romance with a bit of suspense thrown in.

Top 3 things on your bucket list?
Three things I have planned for next year-cruise to western Mexico (themed ukulele cruise), cruise to Alaska, road trip to the Florida Everglades and Key West in conjunction with the RWA convention in Orlando.  Three things on the list I haven’t planned yet-Europe, South Sea Islands, northern continental US.

How did you get the idea for this particular novel?
I play the dulcimer and love to go to dulcimer festivals and listen to really good dulcimer players.  I also play the ukulele.  I am using a lot of the music and atmosphere from those activities.

What is your favorite scene in your new release?
Ren’s scoping out the drug scene at the festival camping ground-don’t ask me where I got it!  I’ll never tell.

What are you working on now and when can we expect it to be available?
The second and third books in the Smoky Blue series-‘Smoke’ and ‘Evergreen’-are out now.  I’m starting ‘Indigo’ next week.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I play four musical instruments-piano, organ, dulcimer and ukulele.  I play in two musical groups.  My husband and I travel a lot and run around occasionally in our Miata.

What is one interesting fact about you that readers don’t know?
I spent 39 years teaching science in an inner city high school and have heard the four worst words a teacher can hear-‘You taught my mother’.

    1. I plotted this book and three other in the fall of 2015. I started writing in February and finished the first draft in April. My beta reader read it while I was on a road trip to my son's wedding in May. I made her suggested changes the last two weeks of May, and then on to Boroughs. I could have worked faster but I spent a good bit of March in a cast and typed a lot of it with only one finger and a thumb on my left hand. It slowed me down some.

  4. After writing so many books, where do you find the inspiration for new stories?

    1. Wow. Not sure. I used to think everybody drove down the street making up stories in their head and was surprised to find out it isn't so. These particular stories are an outgrowth of my interest in old mountain music-the music that actually predates bluegrass and country and western-and taking up both the dulcimer and ukulele. I bought my first dulcimer on a trip to see my grandchildren in Tennessee and my first three ukuleles on trips to Hawaii to see my other son and his family. I've learned to play them and have been to all the festivals depicted in the books.
      Thank you for asking!
