BLURB:

Former firefighter Echo Rose may have recovered from the injuries that nearly ended her life but the emotional scars still linger. She now devotes herself to protecting wildlife and sheltering her heart until local contractor Rey Bowen reminds Echo that life can offer so much more.

Rey Bowen is not the only one at Lake Serene with secrets and a desire to reboot his seriously derailed life. Meeting Echo reminds him that life can sparkle with joy and laughter and passion, but can he show the cautious Echo how to love again even as he struggles to trust his own heart?

EXCERPT:

“Ranger Echo Rose,” a rumbling voice said.

Taking it slow, she turned in the direction the words came from.

Rey Bowen was looking at her, or rather looking down at her. He wasn’t a giant of a man, just a shade over six feet, but that didn’t stop her from remembering she was at least seven inches shorter and only one hundred twenty pounds. For reasons she was careful not to examine too closely, she’d told herself the breadth of his chest and width of his shoulders were responsible for her unsettling reaction to him.

What was she thinking? Hadn’t she learned, painfully, to keep emotional distance between herself and men? She had, darn it. She’d never drop her guard.

Until she’d done in her ankle, she’d spent much of her time around physical people, most of them men. She still was around more men than women, but in recent months she'd mostly rubbed shoulders with people who spent their days behind desks.

Despite how she'd been forced to earn her living since last summer, she believed she still understood the physical male. When he was around women he was trying to impress, the breed carried himself as if he was a bull elk, strutting a bit, hard muscles pushing against too-tight T-shirts, and gazes giving out bedroom vibes.

Rey did none of those things. Instead, it was as if he’d built an emotional wall around himself. The reason was none of her business, darn it. She had enough to do dealing with her own life.

Talking with author Vella Munn!

What is your writing environment?
When my husband and I were looking to have a house built, my office was the only thing I cared about. I have an upstairs L shaped space that would work as a bedroom. There’s a bathroom up here so if I had a refrigerator and microwave, I could live up here. Best off all is the large window just past my monitor that looks at the hills, trees, sky, and the occasional flock of geese.

Who is your perfect hero/heroine and why?
Ones with flaws who are hesitant to let anyone close enough to recognize those flows. Complicated/imperfect childhoods are best because IMO that leads to complexity and depth.

What authors have caught your interest lately and why?
I just finished reading Lisa Hendrix’s Viking era historical called Immortal Warrior because a friend recommended it. I was absolutely/completely/totally blown away by how seamlessly she created an ancient world. Maisey Yates is a friend but I have no hesitancy recommending her cowboy series because she brings readers deep and intimately into that magical and complicated act of falling in love.

What type of book have you always wanted to write?
Man against nature/survival. Hey, you asked. J It really isn’t a fiction genre which I learned after I’d written my only such book which I’ve self-published as Whiteout. I love pitting complex characters against nature.

Top 3 things on your bucket list?
Oh my gosh. I’m not sure I have any. Getting this house dusted would be great but it probably isn’t going to happen. More seriously, I’d love to go back to Alaska. I feel the same way about running away to the Oregon coast until I’ve checked out every restaurant that serves clam chowder.

How did you get the idea for this particular novel?
His Montana Rescue is book #2 in the Montana Lakeside series. The series idea came to me when I was in a small Colorado town at a cabin with a dear writer friend. We were sitting on a deck that overlooked a creek and sipping wine while watching a storm roll in. As a country hick born and raised in the mountains, I felt completely at home. Suddenly I wanted to write romances about men and women in need of second chances who fall in love while living or working in the wilderness.

What is your favorite scene in your new release?
Probably when my forest ranger heroine is explaining to the hero how she nearly lost her life while fighting a fire. He holds her and quietly listens as she relives the nightmare.

What are you working on now and when can we expect it to be available?
Oh my, I recently put the final period on the last book in the Montana Lakeside series and started going through some erotic romances I wrote under a pen name that I got the rights to back. I try to separate the real me (Vella) from my erotica writing alter ego so the less said here the better. I am starting to map out a new series about people living in a small town trying to put their lives back together following an arson fire.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I love hanging out with other writers and mucking around in my small garden, but my husband is disabled and my son recently had his fourth back surgery so there isn’t much free time.

What is one interesting fact about you that readers don’t know?
I own one purse and three pairs of shoes. No dresses. Two skirts. You might deduce that I hate shopping. You’d be right.
