An interview with author Erin Fanning!
How did you come up with the title, Blood
Stitches?
At one point in the
story, the main character, Gabby, and her soon-to-be-more-than-friend Frank are
connected by magical yarn that threads in and out of their wrists, becoming
blood stitches, so the title reflects that important part of the plot, as well
as the danger Gabby and her friends face throughout the novella.
The book explores good and evil in the
characters of Gabby and Esperanza, who also happen to be sisters. It’s never
clear if Esperanza actually wants to give up her naughty ways. Were you
ambiguous on purpose? If so, why?
I suppose I was
unclear on purpose. I thought it would be more interesting to let the reader
decide, but in my mind, Esperanza is definitely attracted to the dark, a pull
she will always have to battle.
What is
your writing process?
Current events and everyday encounters often get stuck in my imagination. Turkey vultures perched along the road look like a coven of witches or an ordinary tapestry resembles an opening to another world
These story ideas churn around in my brain for days, months, sometimes years, until they practically force their way out through my fingertips. Next I jot down several paragraphs or pages, whatever I can. Then I take a breath and make a rough outline of the plot and characters, filling in the blanks, and reworking it as I go.
What book has most influenced your life?
Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz series introduced me to novels, as well as fantasies. I spent
many, many happy hours in grade school devouring the series. I credit him for
giving me a lifelong fascination with writing and reading.
