BLURB:
On the run from evil, her only hope is the Shadows.
Devyn James escaped hell once. A rare technopath, she eventually broke out of the genetics testing facility with the help of the Shadow Elites—General Conver’s super soldiers, who rebelled and now fought to protect psychically enhanced humans.
For the past few months Devyn, or Indy as she’s known on the street, has covertly passed intel to the SEO. Even though the street doesn’t trust the Shadows, she does. They rescued her once and she knows they’re the only ones who will be able to save her from Conver and figure out what she uncovered.
Dagan is determined to save the female being chased by Conver and his squadron. He soon discovers her identity and vows he’ll do anything to keep her protected—even if it’s from herself.
Together they discover everything is possible when you trust A Shadow’s Embrace.

EXCERPT:
Dagan smirked as he took a couple of steps back and reached
for a plastic bag. He handed it to her. “Convenience food of the gods. Eat.
Rest. Then we’ll talk.”
She peeked into the bag. Sour cream potato chips. Diet Coke.
Packaged tuna sandwich. Fried cherry pie.
Her gaze narrowed. “Exactly how did you know what I like?”
“I have my ways.”
Tossing the bag on the bed behind her, she shoved him back.
Or tried to. He chuckled.
“You read my mind while I was passed out?” That was…that
was…Arg. She couldn’t even think about how screwed up that was.
“Like I said, you and I need to work on your perceptions of
me.”
“Oh, gee, why would I think you’re a disreputable pain in
the ass who’s one step above one of Conver’s minions? Could it be because you
manipulated my mind? No? Well, maybe it has to do with the fact you dragged me
out into the middle of nowhere, away from my team, and then read my mind to find
out I prefer cherry pies over apple.”
He grabbed her wrist before the slap she attempted made
contact. “Diaz suggested it, seemed to think it’d put me on your good side.”
Oh. Well.
“As for the other stuff, you know why I took control of you
earlier today. Were we to switch places, you would’ve done the same
thing."
He returned to the hovering position inches away. His other
hand grasped the back of her neck and dragged her forward until their lips
almost met. “Ease off the pissed just a little, babe, because I’m hanging on by
a thread. I’m having a real hard time remembering you aren’t mine to protect.
The more you argue, the hotter I get to prove exactly why I have the right to
handle you.”

Let's learn a little about author Cara Carnes:
What
is your writing environment?
Terrifying!
LOL. Right now it’s in desperate need of some organization. Papers are strewn
all over my L-shaped desk. I use the term desk very liberally because it’s
really two long folding tables. Eventually I want to get a “real” desk, but
this suits my needs now and leaves plenty of room for my copious amounts of
plotting notes. The walls are covered with those large science project boards.
And white boards. I have one wall with 2 white boards (I want more, but it’s a small
room w/limited wall space). One wall has a bookshelf and a yellow project
board. The wall I face has a TV for background noise, another small shelf and a
red project board. The wall to my right has a couple of windows and a black
project board.
It’s
realllllly glamourous. Let me tell you.
Who is your perfect hero/heroine and why?
Honestly
I wouldn’t say any of them are perfect. I tend to prefer flawed heroes and
heroines who have to either learn something about themselves or overcome a
problem of some sort.
What authors have caught your interest lately and why?
Ouch.
I couldn’t possibly point anyone out over anyone else because a) I’m terribly
behind on my reading and b) there are way too many wonderfully talented authors
out there.
What type of book have you always wanted to write?
A
dystopian style book of some sort because I enjoy world building challenges. I
wouldn’t want to do anything on the norm for the book, though. I’m actually
starting a paranormal style dystopian series and am very excited to see where
it goes.
Top 3 things on your bucket list?
I
don’t really have a bucket list so I’m making this up on the fly J
- Travel to New Zealand
- Explore Alaska
- Do a week-long abandon technology retreat….no phones, internet, etc.
How did you get the idea for this particular novel?
I’ve
always been fascinated with the idea of psychic phenomena and I’m enthralled by
covert ops books. My muse ruminated over the possibilities for a while, then I
began research into locations, etc. I wanted the setting to be an active
participant in the plot. That’s where the Chicago setting came into play and
the presence of psychic children now displaced on the streets. Everything fell
together from there.
What is your favorite scene in your new release?
Hmm….my
real favorite would give away the plot, as would my second choice. So I’m
afraid I can’t answer this question.
What are you working on now and when can we expect it to be available?
My
current WIP is the next Rending series book. It’s a paranormal dystopian and
carries on where the last one left off with a new heroine and Marek as the
hero. I’m very excited about this series since I’ve always wanted to do a
dystopian style book that’s different than the norm.
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I
love reading (obviously), photography and travel. I don’t get to do much of the
latter because of my day job, but one day I hope to.
What
is one interesting fact about you that readers don’t know?
LOL…. Honestly I’m quite boring. I can’t think of anything
“interesting” about myself. Maybe that’s why I enjoy world building so much.
