5 Films that Inspired the Night Stalkers Series
by M.L. Buchman
This week I’m celebrating the release of the sixth book in my Night Stalkers military romantic suspense series Bring On The Dusk. In the story, long-time team member Colonel Michael Gibson of Delta Force finally finds true love with pilot Captain Claudia Casperson.
Each book in the series has followed the battles and loves of members of the real-world’s U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. These are the best helicopter pilots and crew on the planet, far in advance of even our closest allies.
A popular question I get asked by fans is how I come up with the plots and characters for the Night Stalkers books, so today I am revealing the top 5 movies that have inspired my series.

1.       Black Hawk Down –an obvious choice for unobvious reasons. I already knew about the Night Stalkers when I saw the movie. But Michael Gibson was inspired by the Eric Bana character “Hoot” who had perhaps four lines in the movie, but he had the attitude I was seeking.
2.       Blue Thunder –a wonderfully bad secret super-helicopter movie from the 1980s inspired me to think about secret helicopter when the idea came along over twenty years later.
3.       Not a movie, but the television footage of President Jimmy Carter and the subsequent news footage of the failure to rescue the Iranian hostages. It would be years before I understood that catastrophic and deadly failure in the desert was the event that led to the creation of the 160th SOAR Night Stalkers.
4.       Every single romance movie (I’m a huge fan! Yep, I’m a mush at heart.)
5.       Heartbreak Ridge –oddly enough for how little I liked the film. It showed a dysfunctional military, led by more dysfunctional leaders, who survived an unclear battle as much by chance as skill (at least that’s how I remember it and I haven’t gone back to check that memory thirty years later). When researching the background to create my Night Stalkers series, I came to deeply respect those who serve, especially those who choose it as a career. I strive to show that respect rather than hold it up as something pitiful.
