Excerpt:
The Black Brew loomed at one end of the L-shaped building.
Vince pulled into the first open spot in the parking lot and strode toward the
entrance. His senses flared and he stepped back into the shadows. Power,
ancient power, threaded the air. His chest constricted as he fought down his
urge to gasp.
Two men exited the Black Brew and Vince dropped behind a
white Chevy truck. Vince’s heart seized at seeing John talking with the
innocuous, bespectacled, middle-aged man. Bonaventura stood in front of John,
casually talking to him.
Dio. The bastard had used glamour on John.
Vince clenched his hands, fighting back the urge to rush
forward. Instead he crouched in the darkness. Steadying his nerves, he listened
in on their conversation, ready to spring into action.
John showed Bonaventura a photograph. “You’ve seen this man.
You’re sure?”
“Yes, maybe a couple of a week ago.”
“Was he alone?”
“Yes, he was sitting alone in back of the room. I noticed
him because he stood out.”
What the devil was this monster thinking? Was he baiting
John, enough to lure him into a secluded area? To sink his teeth into John’s
neck.
Rage filled Vince as he visualized the horrid scene. He’d go
to hell and back to protect John. Time to end this.
Pick on someone your own size, Bonaventura. Or, are you
afraid to face me?
The second Vince’s thought entered Bonaventura’s mind, the
vampire’s jaw twitched. But he remained composed, his disguise in place, his
smile fixed on John.
Vince had to keep taunting. Find a way to lure the Ancient
away from John without an open confrontation.
You choose to attack a human? The great Bonaventura has sunk
so low, picking on someone who can’t fight back.
Vincenzo. The disgraced heir who no longer has a place in
our lustrous history. I hold more power in my little finger than your puny
display.
Come on, John. Move on.
Bonaventura leaned in and whispered to John. John’s
shoulders went slack, his mouth and his eyes drooped.
Vince was losing control of the situation. He needed to lure
Bonaventura away from John to break the spell. He called out to Angelo for
backup before going back to taunting Bonaventura.
It is me you want. You and I know this. Why waste time with
this human?
I get pleasure luring humans into false security and then
seeing the terror in their eyes when the glamour wears off and they are
confronted with their biggest nightmare.
You will not get away with it tonight. I will stop you.
What is one more human life lost? Or perhaps this human
interests you?
Humans are immaterial to me. I am trying to stop your
foolish actions, which could lead to the discovery of our people.
Bonaventura tensed as Vince sensed Angelo’s presence in the
vicinity. Time to make his move. Vince shot from the shadow of the truck. His
fangs burned in anticipation of a fight but he resisted the urge.
Come on, old one. Let’s take this somewhere else.
Bonaventura sketched an imitation salute. “The Quester and
the exile. We shall meet again.” With that, he blinked out of sight.
“John!” Vince waved his hand in front of John to wake him
from the trance.

My stories are an eclectic mix of contemporary and paranormal, but it is always
romance that drives the story to its final happily-ever-after. There's nothing

Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteHI Sue, Thanks so much for hosting us. We've been asking at the other blogs - who rocks your boat based on the cover? Blue-eyed all American John, or brooding, tattooed Vince? Now we each have our faves - we're not telling though <grin?
ReplyDeleteCheers, Vina
Good morning Sue, and thank you for hosting us. Yep, Vina is right, we're not telling who are fav is - it just wouldn't be fair to either Vince or John. Plus we just don't need a jealous character nagging in our ear. :) We're writing book three, and we need them to cooperate!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great book..I really enjoyed the excerpt! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Victoria. Glad you enjoyed the excerpt and hope you'll love the book, too. :)
DeleteOnly a few more days left of the tour... I could not choose who my favourite character is either, but it would be worse for you as I sure both would not be happy if their partner is upset and you might not get the next book written for ages and that would not do at all LOL! I really look forward to reading this book, good luck :D
ReplyDeleteToo funny, Sula, but yes, we do need to write the third book without having an overly emotional Vince or an angry tempered detective breathing down our backs. Now, how to keep Angelo in line?
DeleteGosh the book sounds great! Loved the excerpt and I've added it to my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteThe premise is interesting
