A Shadow on the Ground

BLURB:

Morgan Maguire is afraid to believe in second chances. The family orchard is failing, her twin brother is being framed for murder, and the sharks are circling. The tough exterior she's spent years hiding behind is beginning to crumble, just as the man who shattered her heart is back in her life. Gage Kirkland is as compelling and magnetic as ever, and he's offering the kind of help she may not be able to refuse. But can she trust him?

To finance his troubled son's therapy, Gage, a former investigator, takes one last job--recovering a stolen Civil War artifact. Unfortunately, it's in the possession of the woman he left behind, the woman who's haunted his dreams ever since. The electricity between them still crackles, but unless he helps exonerate her brother and finds a way to confess his true reason for returning, how will he ever recover Morgan's heart?

EXCERPT:

Gage leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. The words weren’t exactly pouring out.

He took a deep breath and clasped his hands in front of him, like a preacher signaling for the congregation to bow their heads. Then he took another breath and plowed ahead.

“Jeremy lost his mother two months ago, and he's a mess right now. He keeps lashing out at me, hoping to make me hurt as much as he does. I'm sure you've figured that out. But I want you to know I did not kill my ex-wife—his mother.”

“I didn’t think you did,” Morgan said.

“It was an accident. There were extenuating circumstances which Jeremy blames me for. But I did not—I could never—” He lifted his eyes and looked at her. “I don't want you to think badly of me.”

“That's why you came back here tonight? So I won't think badly of you?”

“Yes. I mean, no. I just—”

“Well, I do think badly of you. I'll always think badly of you.”

“You don't mean  that.”

“Why not? I can think badly of you  if I want to. Most girls have a guy in their past they wish they'd never met. You're mine. Of course, most girls don't get to experience the thrill of having the guy show up out of the blue twelve years later. With his kid. On the worst day of their lives.”

“If I'd known you were going to find a dead body today, I would have waited until tomorrow to show up.”

She leveled her gaze at him. “I can’t tell you how much better that makes me feel.”

Author Interview:

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

I used to want to be someone shorter and thinner with straight hair and miniscule hips. I wanted to be the kind of person who could eat anything and not gain an ounce, who could smile twice at the man she loved and have him wrapped around her little finger. I wanted to be athletic and flat-stomached and sexy without trying. I wanted to be mysterious. But you know what? Throughout my life, I’ve met women who were all of those things and more. And every one of them had a secret sorrow buried deep beneath the surface. So, it doesn’t matter how fabulous someone’s life looks on the outside, it’s a sure bet it’s not all sunshine and roses. I do hold a certain amount of envy for writers who can put out more than one really good manuscript a year and still have a life. In that respect, I’d like to be them. But mostly I’m just glad I’m me.

What did you do on your last birthday?

What I wanted to do was crawl into bed and pull the covers over my head. Only women of a certain age will understand that statement, but it’s true. What I actually did was go to my favorite restaurant with my husband then stop by my favorite pub for pie (with a candle) and margaritas. Because everyone knows that all carbs and calories consumed on your birthday do not count.

Do you have any tattoos?  Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?

No tattoos. I used to want a tiny butterfly tattooed on my left shoulder, but I kept putting it off and never got around to it. My son, who was twenty-five at the time, had Max from Where the Wild Things Are tattooed on his back. I sat next to a woman at a restaurant who had three of the monsters from that book tattooed on her arm. I leaned over and said, “Excuse me, but I know where your soul mate lives.” She said, “Where?” And I said, “In my basement.”

What are you working on right now?

I’m writing a book that is more of a contemporary romance than a straight mystery/suspense. There is some mystery in it, of course, and a dead body has shown up because I can’t seem to propel the plot without one. All of my books have humor in them, but so far, this one’s overall tone is much lighter. I’m still banging out the first draft, but I’m having a lot of fun writing it.

Best movie ever made?

To Kill a Mockingbird.  I’m not sure if it’s the best, but it’s definitely my favorite.
