Gavin watched
Virginia from across the table. This was not the cool, aloof and businesslike
professional he’d been dealing with yesterday. This woman was not the ice
queen.
This Virginia
was warm and kind. She had an easy rapport with them. At the hospital there was
a tangible barrier between Virginia and the other surgeons. A mix of fear and
respect. The woman currently sitting in his dining room was not Dr. Virginia
Potter, Chief of Surgery.
Only she was.
He was amazed at
how well she got on with his nieces. Lily had been so closed off and cold with
strangers since Casey had got sick and died. Even with him it had taken some
time for Lily to warm up and trust him.
And you couldn’t
blame Lily for that reaction. Death had hit her hard, twice, in her young life.
With Virginia,
Lily was chatting happily and engaging her in conversation. A smile touched his
lips as he watched the two of them talk. Virginia was asking Lily about dancing
and school. Was this what it was like to have a real family dinner?
He wouldn’t
know.
His parents had
never been around. Casey and he had lived off of cereal and peanut-butter and
jelly sandwiches. Sometimes, when Mom hadn’t gone shopping, there would only be
enough bread or cereal for one. Those were the nights he’d gone to bed hungry,
because he had been taking care of Casey.
Now he was
taking care of Casey’s girls, making sure they wanted for nothing and that they
were happy. It was why he was in the city instead of some far-flung country.
“I think your
sister is out for the night. What do you think, Gavin?”
“What?” Gavin
asked, shaking those painful childhood memories from his head. “What’s up?”
“Uncle Gavin,
Rose is passed out in her chair.” Lily gazed at her little sister lovingly
