Guest Post & Giveaway - Embers (Common Law, Book 2) by Kate Sherwood

Embers
By Kate Sherwood

About Embers:

Small town—big problems. Jericho Crewe is back in Mosely, Montana, trying to deal with police corruption, interfering feds, his newly discovered family members, and, of course, Wade Granger.

He doesn’t really need a biker war on top of it all, but as the bodies start to pile up, it becomes pretty clear that’s what he’s got. Not only that, but Wade’s involved somehow, and as soon as Wade is a part of something, things that seemed clear become cloudy.

With the feds breathing down his neck, Jericho has to find his way through Wade’s maze of half truths and manipulations. It would all be so much easier if Jericho could think straight in the other man’s presence. So much easier if their passionate past could be forgotten, and if he could be sure he’s strong enough to resist the temptation of a passionate present.

Now available from Riptide Publishing and Amazon.

Why I wanted to write the Common Law series. by Kate Sherwood

Oops. I’m in trouble already, because I didn’t want to write the Common Law series. I wanted to write one book about these two characters I had in mind, and I wanted it to be a standard contemporary romance with none of the action/adventure, cops & robbers complications. It would have been simple and straightforward, and I like simple and straightforward.

But it wouldn’t have worked. The characters are too far apart at the start and they need to go through too much in order for their relationship to feel as fated as I wanted it to feel. Without all the extra complications Jericho would have stayed in LA and Wade would have stayed in Mosely and they both would have thought of each other now and then (or maybe more often than that) but it would always have been a wistful “I wonder”, nothing more.

So what I really wanted to write was: Scene One with Jericho and Wade. Big space, some stuff happens, who knows what. Scene Two with Jericho and Wade. Big space, some other stuff happens, could be anything, I don’t care. Scene Three with Jericho and Wade. Etc.

But I also wanted to write something that people would like to read, and I’m really not confident that my “I don’t care, maybe there’s a crime or something and they spend some time on that” approach wouldn’t be too satisfying for readers. So I had to spend some time on filling in the gaps. And of course once I started thinking about it all I got intrigued and tried to find ways that the “maybe there’s a crime or something” parts could be integrated into the growth of the relationship and how of course people’s lives aren’t totally compartmentalized so the themes and issues Jericho faces in his professional life end up resonating in his personal life as well, and it all got complicated and interesting. I wasn’t writing filler anymore, I was writing stories, stories that added richness to the overarching romance.

So, why did I want to write the Common Law series? I didn’t want to. Not at first!

 About Kate Sherwood:

Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”--other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy--the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

  1. Congratulations on the release of the Common Law series. Thanks for your explanation how this series came about. You can more often write just one book if one becomes four. I like serial books.

  5. Well, that's a surprise! Didn't see it coming. Though I admit that I'm not a fan of a story of the same MCs that extends from the first book up to the last, I can definitely appreciate the charm & thrill this series got. We may not get the happy ending right away, I know that it'll be worth it in the end. (Right, Kate?)
