Beneath

by Robin Heggelund Hansen

BLURB:

Nine years have passed since the tragic and mysterious deaths of Mr. Phillips and his daughter. A new clue surfaces, one which the lead investigator will follow to the brink of insanity.

EXCERPT:

To whoever reads this: I feel that I must apologize if what you find on these pieces of paper appears to be nothing more than a collection of near-indecipherable words. I can assure you that I have tried everything I can think of, and yet I cannot keep my hands from trembling. This, however, is only a symptom of my much greater problems.

I cannot eat, or sleep, or even close my eyes for longer than the briefest of moments. I feel as if I’m about to lose my mind, but I’m clear enough to realize that I have to get this story off my chest, before it consumes whatever sanity I have left. Unfortunately, the only recipient I can trust with a story as bizarre and horrible as this are the same pieces of paper upon which these words are written.

Talking with Robin Heggelund Hansen!

What is your writing environment?

My living-room. I sit on the floor between my coffee-table and my couch, with some dark ambiance and rain playing from my speakers. If I’d had room, I would probably invest in a proper office.

Who is your perfect hero/heroine and why?

My perfect hero(ine) is someone who puts the needs of others before their own. Pretty basic right? It allows me to tell a good story, but it’s also an ideal I myself try to strive against.

What authors have caught your interest lately and why?

I’ve decided that I need to read some of the classics. Kafka, Orwell, whoever it was that wrote Lord of the Flies. It’s just one of those things you need to do, I guess. Before that I read the horror classics, Lovecraft and Poe.

What type of book have you always wanted to write?

I’m already writing them.

Top 3 things on your bucket list?

        1.     Finish a novel, in addition to the short stories.

        2.     Make a game.

        3.     Visit comic-con.

How did you get the idea for this particular novel?

No idea. My family has been talking a lot about cabins lately, I guess I just wanted to take a happy family weekend and turn it on its head.

What is your favourite scene in your new release?

It’s hard to say without spoiling the story. There is this classic scene in any horror story, when there is a moment of pause and suspense. In those brief seconds, both the character and the reader know that what they are chasing will finally reveal itself. It’s a cliché, but I love it.

What are you working on now and when can we expect it to be available?

I’m currently working on the third instalment of the Eldritch City Shorts series. This one will be a novelette or a novella I think, so I’m not entirely sure when it will be done. Hopefully before halloween. In this third story, we get to explore another fringe element that makes up Eldritch City, through the eyes of someone who has never been there.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Lot’s of things. I’m politicly active for the Liberal party here in Norway, and there’s an election coming up so I’m spending a fair amount of time there. I also spend some time developing software every now and again. My favourite activity though, must be playing boardgames and tabletop RPGs with my friends over a glass of wine.

What is one interesting fact about you that readers don’t know?

If I ever earn big money on writing, I’ll spend (some of) it on getting Firefly back. Possibly another Serenity movie.
